The French delegate minister in charge of SMEs, Commerce and Crafts, Olivia Grégoire, said she was in favor of returning cooking classes at school to fight inflation.

“I think (…) that we must teach how to cook raw products again to avoid buying ‘prepared’, more expensive,” Grégoire told the Sud-Ouest newspaper, responding to a question about inflation and its consequences on families.

“It is necessary for cooking classes to return to school,” he added in this interview published on Saturday, defending the “small kitchen of everyday life.”

Food prices remain one of the main drivers of inflation in France, according to the latest figures from the statistics institute on Thursday (11.2% last month at an annual rate).

The minister’s words provoked strong reactions on the left.

“I don’t even feel like laughing,” reacted the leader of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure on X (ex-Twitter), denouncing the government’s “social contempt instead of justice.”

“Given the shortage of drinking water, take wine tasting classes,” joked leftist leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon on the same social network.

In February, socialist senator Angèle Préville told AFP she was in favor of reintroducing cooking classes in schools, pointing out the health risks of so-called “ultra-processed” foods.
