The Executive Branch resolved to grant partial unemployment insurance for three months for the hotel sector due to “the impact on activity” linked in part to competitiveness with Argentina due to the exchange difference that benefits the neighboring country. This was announced by the head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Pablo Mieres, in a press conference this Monday, accompanied by the head of the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur), Tabaré Viera.

The measure will begin to be applied in September and will extend until November inclusive, Mieres said and explained that this implies “the possibility of workers benefiting from partial unemployment insurance for days” because “what we have been told from the hotel business is “There are many hotels that operate only during the weekends, from Friday to Monday.”

The partial unemployment insurance covers the entire national territory because “the impact of Argentina’s impact has been reflected in the hotel industry in other parts of the country,” beyond the coast, and the government estimates that it will benefit around “1,000 workers.”

For his part, Viera reiterated that the measure covers “hotels that are open a few days a week for different reasons depending on the area. The people of the coast have obviously suffered a lot, particularly the thermal destination, with what it has been like this winter with the loss of competitiveness against Argentina.”

Viera recalled that this measure has already been provided on previous opportunities to small and medium-sized businesses throughout the pandemic and “has been extended according to activities and different times of the year.” “In recent times, the hotel industry has presented both MTSS and Mintur with its situation: that it has not fully recovered from that stage of the pandemic, but above all that it has this new challenge of competitiveness with Argentina.”

Mieres also announced that it was resolved to grant partial unemployment insurance for two sectors “affected by the drought in terms of their harvest”: “Citrus workers and fruit workers.” In this case, this measure is in force in the “next few days” and will be applied for six months “to the extent that the crops of the entire harvest in both sectors have been greatly affected and they have worked fewer months than in other years.”
