The official list of candidates selected to take part in the race for the supreme office should be known on Saturday at the latest, according to a source at the High Constitutional Court (HCC). If 28 candidates submitted their files to Ambohidahy until Thursday, the official list should be smaller, in view of the candidates who withdrew and the possibility of incomplete files which would cause the exclusion of some of them.

Yesterday, three of the 28 already announced the withdrawal of their files. Besides, Masy Goulamaly and Julia Mickaëlle Rasolofonoriniaina, James Andriantsihety Rasoamaka also withdrew from the race. However, it is not possible to withdraw applications after the application deadline. Indeed, article 13 paragraph first of organic law No. 2018-009 relating to the election of the President of the Republic provides that no withdrawal of candidacy is permitted after the deadline for submitting candidacy files. .

For Masy Goulamaly, she withdrew just after the announcement of Andry Rajoelina’s candidacy. An abandonment which created a surprise. The MP for Tsihombe did not dwell on his decision. In a short publication on social networks, she simply announced that to confirm the signature she has already made and in order to respect the law in force in the country, she must withdraw her candidacy. A few days ago, eight candidates including Masy Goulamaly signed a joint declaration opposing the candidacy of Andry Rajoelina whose French naturalization decree had been revealed to the public.

Julia Mickaëlle Rasolofonoriniaina, on the proposal of the Andry Fanavotana an’i Madagasikara (AFM) association, submitted her candidacy on September 1 but she also withdrew by announcing her support for Andry Rajoelina. In fact, he was missing several documents in his file for his application to be valid. Julia Mickaëlle Rasolofonoriniaina has appeared recently with the controversial Jean-Nirina Rafanomezantsoa of the HAFARI association.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) plans to draw lots for the candidates selected for the single ballot. This draw will be carried out at the CENI premises in Alarobia on Monday September 11. This body then plans to hold a sharing and discussion session with the official candidates around ten days later.

In any case, preparations are progressing and the Electoral Commission continues to confirm that the presidential election will indeed take place, despite attempts to contest it. It simply remains to be seen in what atmosphere this election will be held in view of the current political tension.
