A good omen two weeks before the World Gymnastics Championships. The French women, led by Mélanie De Jesus dos Santos, distinguished themselves in Paris this weekend, during the French internationals.

The 23-year-old from Martinique was full of confidence by winning two gold medals, on the uneven bars and on floor this Sunday. First entered on bars, she obtained a score of 14.700, enough to beat the Brazilian Rebeca Andrade (14.600), reigning world champion in the all-around, and the Algerian Kaylia Nemour (14.100).

Barely an hour later, she was back on the Bercy floor to win on the ground after a passage full of grace. His acrobatics of a high technical level allowed him to collect 13,650 points. These two gold medals should allow him to approach the Worlds in two weeks in Antwerp (September 30 to October 8) with maximum confidence. A competition that is all the more important as it will be the main qualifying stage for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“It bodes well for the World Championships, now all we have to do is let’s go for Olympic qualification,” she declared in front of the lively audience at Bercy. “I’m always intimidated when I come to Bercy because the crowd is incredible,” she added.

Marine Boyer in gold on beam

Operated at the end of last year, Mélanie De Jesus dos Santos had two convincing performances during competitions in the United States, where she trains. “Her results in the United States were particularly good, she confirms this evening. (…) We can clearly see that the elements are well laid out, she masters her exercises, she manages to reproduce the performance,” said National Technical Director Kévinn Rabaud.

“I think that Mélanie, and the entire French team, are in good spirits,” he added. I’m waiting for them to be confirmed at the World Championships. » The Marseillaise resounded a third time on Sunday in the Accor Arena with Marine Boyer’s title on the balance beam. The Frenchwoman won gold with 13,500 points despite a small mistake when entering the apparatus.

“I was very stressed, I stayed on the beam as best I could but I still made a lot of mistakes, but I did my job. It’s hard to be expected and to do your job, that’s what I did so I’m very happy,” reacted the Reunion Islander. Finally, the French won a fourth medal thanks to Coline Devillard, in the vault event.

Three medals for the Blues

On the men’s side, the Blues collected three medals with Benjamin Osberger in silver on floor, Léo Saladino second on vault and Cameron-Lie Bernard in bronze on parallel bars.

“I had some problems with my Achilles tendon so I wasn’t really ready physically but I’m super happy with what I did. I went for every tenth that I could,” said Benjamin Osberger, credited with 14.650 points. Finally for his big comeback after a long biceps injury, Samir Aït Saïd finished fourth in the rings final.

But there was not only sport on Sunday in the Bercy arena. Spectators were treated to a romantic sequence with Italian Salvatore Maresca. The winner of the rings final took advantage of his visit to “the capital of love” to take the microphone and propose to his partner just after receiving his medal.
