Mahidol University Develops Protein Product to Treat Organic Acid Metabolism Disorders

Protein is an essential nutrient for the body at all ages. It is made up of 20 types of amino acids, including both essential and non-essential amino acids. However, there are some diseases, such as Organic Acid Metabolism Disease, that prevent the normal metabolism of amino acids, resulting in severe symptoms and developmental delays. These diseases are classified as rare diseases, affecting 1 in 25,000 people.
Until now, there have been no special medical food products available for the treatment of organic acid metabolism disorders in Thailand. The country has relied on periodic donations from abroad, causing uncertainty and a risk of product shortages during various crisis situations. In order to address this issue, Mahidol University has undertaken a project to develop protein formulas for the treatment of pediatric patients with organic acid metabolism defects.
The project was initiated by Ms. Suthida Chatwuttinun, a PhD student from the Institute of Nutrition at Mahidol University. She and her research team have developed a prototype food innovation using sunflower seeds and fish maw, which are low in the problematic amino acids. The product has undergone physical and sensory testing in adult volunteers, and the research team is now preparing to test it in real patients.
The ultimate goal of this project is to increase the efficiency of nutritional treatment for patients with organic acid metabolism disorders and provide sustainable and affordable food products within Thailand. Mahidol University is committed to using its knowledge and resources to develop more effective treatments and expand the care system for these rare diseases.
