INFO LE FIGARO – Distributors will stick to the sale of fuel at cost price, which they have each been practicing for several months.

All united against the high cost of living, but not to the point of selling fuel at a loss. Summoned Tuesday morning in Bercy by Bruno Le Maire, the managers of Leclerc, Carrefour, Intermarché, Système U, Casino and Auchan expressed their unanimous opposition to the loss-making resale of fuel in the parking lots of their hypermarkets. On Saturday evening, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne created a surprise by announcing a law allowing distributors to resell fuel at a loss for six months from December. A “new tool”, we explained at Bercy, made available to them to lower prices without renewing the very costly rebate on fuel financed last year by the State.

The ace. Any more than the State, distributors are not ready to subsidize the reduction in fuel. “The possibility of selling at a loss will not be followed because it is not economically tenable”, their representatives explained in unison to ministers Bruno Le Maire and Olivia Grégoire. The brands will therefore stick to the sale of fuel at cost price, which they have each been practicing for several months.

Protect their image and the government

Distributors should remain publicly discreet about their refusal, in order to protect both their image and the government… They are awaiting the government’s support to modify the Descrozaille law, which provides for the continued raising of the threshold for resale at a loss for retailers. food products and a 34% cap on promotions on hygiene and beauty items. Bruno Le Maire encouraged Alexandre Bompard (Carrefour) and Thierry Cotillard (Intermarché) to meet MP Frédéric Descrozaille.

Distributors also rely on government support for annual negotiations with their suppliers. Bruno Le Maire announced at the end of August the advancement of the deadline for these negotiations. The minister called on distributors to keep him informed if these negotiations, which should result in a reduction in shelf prices, do not progress quickly enough.
