A 25-year-old creator based in Louisiana is warning against the dangers of popping pimples on the face after contracting a staph infection. The creator, known as Hope (@imlesbianflavored), shared their cautionary tale on TikTok.
In a video posted on September 6, Hope revealed the consequences of popping a pimple on their upper lip. They explained, “Don’t pop your pimples, you guys. I will never pop another pimple on my face. Not ever. And do you know why? Cause I popped this…went to sleep, woke up about midnight [and my] face was hurting. I went and looked in the mirror. Swollen.”
A visit to the doctor confirmed that Hope had contracted a staph infection. They emphasized, “I popped a pimple and it turned into a staph infection. Yeah. Don’t pop your pimples.”
The area where Hope’s pimple was located is referred to as the “triangle of death,” according to comments from TikTok users. This term describes the region of the nose and corners of the mouth, which is particularly susceptible to infections due to its connection to blood vessels in the skull. Another creator, @ravenesky, shared a similar experience and noted being “close to sepsis.”
Dr. Amesh Adalja, a board-certified infectious disease physician, explained that the triangle of death is a hot spot for infections due to its proximity to blood vessels that can quickly spread infections.
Dr. Teresa Song, a board-certified dermatologist, further explained that when a pimple is popped, the protective barrier of the skin is broken, allowing bacteria to enter and cause infections. Popping pimples in the triangle of death is riskier because infections can spread quickly through important vasculatures in that area.
Dr. Song advised using hydrocolloid patches or spot treatments, such as those containing sulfur, benzoyl peroxide, or salicylic acid, to treat pimples. For deep and painful pimples, she recommended warm compresses or cortisone injections done in-office by a professional.
