Caroline Garcia, seeded N.3, had to save two match points against Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich to reach the round of 16 of the WTA 1000 tournament in Guadalajara on Tuesday.
“There was a moment, between the first set and the start of the second, during which I was angry with my game, but little by little I played better”recognized the Frenchwoman after her victory 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, in two hours and 49 minutes.
“It’s not the first time this year that I have had to save a match point, and I’m happy to come away with the victory”added Garcia, who will face the American Hailey Baptiste in the next round, who defeated the Czech Karolina Pliskova.
Seeded N.1 in the tournament, the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, 7th in the WTA ranking, for her part easily disposed of the American Alycia Parks, 45th in the world, in 59 minutes (6-2, 6-2), and will face the Italian Martina Trevisan in the round of 16.
The Greek Maria Sakkari, seeded N.2 and 9th in the world, eliminated the Australian Storm Hunter in one hour and 19 minutes with a score of 6-2, 6-4, and will face another Italian , Camila Giorgi, in the next round.
“I think I had a very solid match, even if the second set was complicated, but I won it and I’m happy to move on to the next round”commented Sakkari.
Ranked 180th in the world, the Colombian Emiliana Arango, for her part, created the little surprise of the day by eliminating the American Sloane Stephens (former world No. 3, now 38th) 6-1, 6-2 in one hour and two minutes of play.
“It was a very good match on my part, from the start, I had a very clear game plan and I followed it very well, making very few mistakes. On the scoreboard, the score is harsh, but it was a very balanced game, of a very high level, Sloane is a player who has a lot of experience”said the 22-year-old Colombian after the match.
In the round of 16, a new challenge awaits her: the 8th player in the world, the American Taylor Townsend.
