The president of the Brazilian Foreign Trade Association (Abracex), Primo Roberto Segatto, conveyed his decades-long demand for the total exemption of imports of used and pre-owned machinery and equipment from industrially developed countries to the highest levels of government. On September 11, he and the entity’s board of directors met with the Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC) and the acting president, Geraldo Alckmin, in the office of the Presidency of the Republic, in Brasília.

Alckmin, who upon receiving the Abracex delegation had at his side the Secretary of Foreign Trade of the MDIC, Tatiana Prazeres, and the executive secretary of the Chamber of Foreign Trade (Camex), Marcela de Carvalho, Segatto explained that only 2% of industry has machinery with an average age of less than two years and 30% have machinery and equipment that is over 40 years old.

Abracex’s claim is seen as controversial and faces strong resistance from the Brazilian Association of the Machinery and Equipment Industry (Abimaq), an entity that brings together the factories of this machinery, but is supported by a survey by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) showing that the Brazilian industrial machines and equipment are, on average, 14 years old, and 38% have already exceeded the age indicated by the manufacturer as the ideal life cycle.

“We told President Alckmin that there is equipment out there that is 3 to 8 years old and costs 30% to 20% lower than new prices. It is true that this equipment is not zero, but it would help a lot to increase the productivity of our industry “, Segatto told Broadcast.

Alckmin, as reported by Segatto himself, instructed Abracex to hold a meeting with the National Industry Development Council (CNDI) to discuss the matter. The meeting has not yet been scheduled, but the entity is already trying to set the day and time for this conversation.
