The Department of Health has issued a warning against buying, selling, or accepting donations of breast milk without proper screening and pasteurization. Dr. Sarawut Bunsuk, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Health, emphasized the importance of going through breast milk banks for safe donations.

In an interview on September 20, Dr. Sarawut shed light on the alarming trend of trading frozen breast milk both domestically and internationally. He revealed that there are currently no laws regulating this practice, making it crucial for mothers to exercise caution.

Receiving breast milk from others is legal in Thailand, but the recommended channel is through a breast milk bank, where the donated milk goes through a thorough screening process to ensure the absence of harmful germs. This is crucial as breast milk can carry infections such as HIV, addictive substances, or certain medications. The quality of milk is also checked after pasteurization to guarantee it does not pose negative effects on the baby’s health.

“We do not recommend giving your child breast milk from another person. Refrain from accepting breast milk donations that do not go through the breast milk bank. And there is still no law supporting this matter,” advised Dr. Sarawut. He further urged mothers who are unable to produce milk for their child to reach out to established breast milk banks, such as Siriraj Hospital, Ramathibodi Hospital, Children’s Hospital, or the Department of Health Health Center, to ensure the safety of their babies.

Dr. Sarawut highlighted that breast milk banks have a sufficient supply of milk to meet the needs of infants. These facilities are supported by various agencies, including UNICEF and private hospitals, making it convenient for mothers to access this service. For mothers who are unable to produce milk, consulting a doctor at a nearby hospital is recommended. Physicians can provide guidance on healthcare, dietary needs, and methods to stimulate milk production. These services are covered under the free National Health Insurance system.

To support mothers who live far from medical facilities, the Department of Health, in partnership with UNICEF, has launched a project to deliver breast milk to those in need. Mothers can pump their own milk, which will be transported via plane to Subdistrict Health Promotion Hospitals. This initiative aims to ensure that all mothers have access to safe and quality breast milk, free of charge.

The Department of Health’s recommendation reinforces the importance of ensuring the health and well-being of infants by receiving breast milk from reputable sources and avoiding unregulated trading practices. By prioritizing the safety of breast milk donations, mothers can provide their children with the vital nutrients and protection they need during their early development.]
