Nobody knows how the Aztecs came up with the idea of getting drunk on fermented agave juice. It’s as if he actually fell from the sky. The only thing that is certain is that there is little trace of the supernatural aspect of the legend in today’s Mexico. Pulque, as the must that can only be enjoyed fresh and locally is called with around five percent alcohol, has become the drink of thieves. Its high-proof, much more famous offspring is completely different: the pulque distillate tequila is more popular than ever, and not just in Mexico. Its sales are increasing all over the world, by a quarter again last year.
