“Tagesschau” spokeswoman Susanne Daubner can prepare slowly: the “youth word of the year” is supposed to be announced in about a month – and Daubner (62) is considered a kind of cult announcer. The list of ten nominated words has been slimmed down to just three favorites, as the Langenscheidt publishing house announced on Wednesday. In addition to “goofy” (weird, clumsy), the terms “NPC” (meaning derogatory, abbreviation for “non-playable character”) and “side eye” (expressing contempt) were also identified.
After the renewed pre-selection, everyone can choose a favorite on the “jugendwort.de” website. According to the publisher, only the voices of participants between the ages of 10 and 20 are relevant for the evaluation. The winner will be announced on October 22nd.
“Tagesschau” spokeswoman Susanne Daubner caused a stir on social media for the first time in 2021 with the topic of youth words when she explained the winning word “cringe” (to make others ashamed) in a state-supporting tone. Last year’s youth word was “smash” (to do something with someone).
