All of a sudden the tones of the pre-election campaign between the “Yoannina New Era” and “New Ioannina Citizens Unity” factions were raised, which seems to have something to do with the fact that they are presented as the favorites for the second round of the elections.
The reaction of the faction of the municipal authority to the press release of the “Unity of Citizens of Nea Giannina” regarding the visit of the head of Thomas Bega to the services of the Municipality of Ioannita and to the central town hall, where there was also a reference to his attempt to meet the mayor Dimitris, was immediate. Papageorgiou. “It should be noted that during the visit to the town hall, Mr. Begas looked for the mayor, in order to meet with him institutionally, but he was informed that he was absent outside of Ioannina. However, he met with the Deputy Mayor of Finance, Fotis Vavvas, in his office at the Municipality’s Financial Services”, the press release states.
Absence, however, which, as the municipal authority points out in its response, could have known if he had contacted to inform about his intention to meet the mayor or if the members of his faction participated in the meetings of the Economic Committee.
“Mr. Begas made a surprise visit to the City Hall, without any prior information, but he claims that he wanted to formally meet the mayor. Institutional meetings are also held in an institutional manner. At least he should have known this, as he had been mayor for five years. Of course, if the members of his faction participated in the meetings of the Economic Committee, as they have an institutional obligation, they would also know about the move of the mayor to Athens and the reason for it. The mayor, as well as other members of the municipal authority, have gone to Athens, in order to attend a large award ceremony for bodies and personalities of the self-government. One of the personalities who will be honored is Moses Elisaf”, the response emphasizes.
The report about the mayor’s absence, however, might not have caused such a sharp reaction, if it had not been accompanied by a photo of Thomas Bega standing at the door of the mayor’s office, holding the doorknob.
This conclusion is at least drawn from the last part of the municipal authority’s response, where it is characteristically noted: “Mr. Begas is in a hurry to return to the mayor’s office. And whoever is in a hurry stumbles. The history of photographs and … images has taught him nothing.” A reference that clearly refers to the choice of T. Bega in the 2019 pre-election period to appear in a TV spot with the image of the Virgin Mary in the frame, apparently following the wrong advice of a communicator to emphasize his religion over his main opponent.
The “Union of Citizens of Nea Ioannina” expresses its surprise at the reaction of the municipal authority, arguing that its announcement did not leave any clue about the absence of the mayor outside of Ioannina, nor were the possible reasons for it questioned.
On the contrary, as mentioned, it was emphasized that in the context of our meetings with employees in municipal services and among others at the town hall, Mr. Begas sought out the mayor, recognizing his institutional role.
“From the events to the response of the municipal authority there are many leaps of logic, which we do not intend to follow. With political culture and without any mood for challenges, we continue our fight for the October elections, without seeking to understand anything”, concludes the rejoinder of the T. Bega faction, which shows a desire not to raise the tone, at this stage at least.
