This Wednesday, September 20, 2023, Arte is broadcasting the film “Omar m’a Tuer” released in 2010. Since the release of the film, where has the Omar Raddad affair been?

It is a legal case which has hit the headlines since 1991, to the point of inspiring a film. This Wednesday, September 20, Arte is broadcasting “Omar m’akiller”, a drama focusing on the Omar Raddad affair, the main suspect in the murder of Ghislaine Marchal. Directed by Sami Bouajila (“Indigènes”, “Braqueurs”), the feature film was released in 2010.

On June 24, 1991, after disappearing for 24 hours, Ghislaine Marchal was found dead in the closed cellar inside her villa on the heights of Mougins, in the Alpes-Maritimes. Near the body, we find two inscriptions in letters of blood: “Omar killed me” and “Omar killed me”.

As a result, the victim’s gardener, Omar Raddad, was charged, although these “bizarre” inscriptions, including a spelling error, questioned the justice system. The motive chosen is then the need for money, even if he has always proclaimed his innocence.

Omar Raddad was sentenced to 18 years of criminal imprisonment in 1994. Two years later, he benefited from a partial pardon granted by Jacques Chirac.

Other DNA analyzes cast doubt on Omar Raddad’s guilt

Now over 60 years old, he continues to proclaim his innocence and lives secluded at home with his family in Toulon, Gala told us in 2021. His lawyer, Me Sylvie Noachovitch, has since requested a review of the trial, without success.

Since then, several other leads have been identified by detectives or in the media who are also leading the investigation. In 2016, DNA analyzes of traces found on two doors and a rafter indicated that they belonged to four men, but not to Omar Raddad. However, the prosecution then announced that “it is possible that a fingerprint, during subsequent manipulation, could have been added”, in particular from police officers or journalists.

The case was reopened at the end of 2021 after new DNA analyzes carried out in 2019 which identified male DNA which did not belong to the suspect located in the blood traces. But this request for review was rejected by the investigating committee of the court of review on October 13, 2022. Omar Raddad’s lawyer announced that she wanted to refer the matter to the European Court of Human Rights.
