Junko Shiba, a 50-year-old Japanese tourist, refused to pay a R$4,700 bill at a seafood restaurant in Singapore, Seafood Paradise. The woman even called the police.

She visited the restaurant with three friends on August 19, and was surprised by the bill of 1,322 Singapore dollars, equivalent to R$4,700. One crab dish alone cost 938 Singapore dollars, the equivalent of R$3,300.

Junko called to police claiming that she was not properly informed about the high cost of the meals.

Junko told Singaporean news site AsiaOne that a waiter suggested chili-crab, a dish made with Alaskan king crab. The meal is famous in Singapore and also in Malaysia.

The dish is charged by weight at the restaurant. 100 grams costs R$95 reais. The tourist said that the waiter did not explain how the charge worked. The king crab served on the plate weighed about 3.5 kg.

A spokesperson for the Paradise Group, which owns Seafood Paradise, said the restaurant showed the whole thing to Junko’s group. “To avoid any miscommunication, the team even brought the entire Alaskan king crab to the table before preparation,” he said.

The tourist who refused to pay for the dish said she didn’t understand that all the crab would be served just for them. She said she deduced that her group would only eat a portion.

“There were three dishes full of crab and many other dishes,” said Junko. “We couldn’t finish it all.” She asked the restaurant itself to call the police.

The manager helped make the police report and offered a discount of R$382. The rest of the bill was paid by credit cardaccording to the magazine Época Negócios.
