With new goals to meet, 141 students began the 2023-2024 school year at the Andrés González Lines Maritime Fishing Institute, the only one of its kind in the country.
Located in Mariel, this Technical-Professional Education center consists of a branch in Manzanillo, Granma province, where 35 of these students are trained.
According to information provided by Mirtha Pérez Sánchez, the teaching secretary, three specialties are studied: Fisheries Biology (only at the Mariel headquarters), Second Class Skipper and Naval Motorist, with 31, 70 and 40 students, respectively. Only 14 women make up this team and they are formed in the first mentioned race.
A faculty made up of 78 teachers, of which 15 correspond to the Manzanillo branch, have the mission of preparing the biologists, skippers and motorcyclists of tomorrow.
On the other hand, in what is also known as the Fishing School, the so-called IMO (International Maritime Organization) courses are taught, which are required by the maritime authorities and must be passed to be on board the vessels.
Last September 11th they started. A week later, the Accommodation Service, Service Sailor and Kitchen ended. Currently, they continue with a course to obtain maritime competence and position titles (in this case, deckhand), which includes elements of basic training in safety aspects; It lasts four weeks and, along with the main headquarters, is also taught at the Fisheries Research Center.
In 2022, there were more than 500 OMI courses, with an enrollment of 14 thousand students; and until the end of July this stage had reached 400, with 12 thousand students, said Antonio Barroso Valdés, deputy director of maritime and business courses.
It is worth highlighting, he added, that we have provided services to more than 40 entities, including Industrial Fishing Companies, Maritime Works, Caribbean Navigation, Maritime Services, Geocuba and Inder.
