The Balochistan Liberation Army: destabilizing element in the complex Pakistani scenario.- Luis Antonio González Francisco
The Pakistani region of Balochistan is very important for several reasons: population, ethnic division, geographical location or mineral resources are some of them. These issues, together with a strong nationalist sentiment on the part of the Baluchi ethnic group, have at different times caused conflicts with the Islamabad government. From these divergences emerged groups that opted for violence to achieve their objectives. One of them is the so-called Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). This terrorist organization defends the independence of Balochistan and the control of the subsoil resources of the area. To this end, it has committed attacks not only against the Pakistani authorities but also against Chinese citizens and interests in the region as the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is Islamabad’s partner when it comes to exploiting resources and facilities in Balochistan.
