The Supreme Court ruled today in a petition by HaMoked for the right of the individual, which requires Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked to discuss Palestinian citizenship applications, which were resubmitted after the expiration of the Citizenship Law.
Shaked’s desk has garnered thousands of applications from Palestinians seeking citizenship by virtue of “family reunification” with Israeli citizens. So far, the applications have been rejected outright in a special regulation of the Citizenship Law that has been extended from year to year, but last summer the coalition failed to get a majority, and the regulation was not extended.
Since then, Shaked has been trying to pass the Citizenship Law again, but has met with opposition from the RAAM factions and the Meretz membership in the coalition. The opposition is demanding a broader citizenship law, submitted by MK Simcha Rotman, Palestinians.
On Sunday, in the Ministerial Committee on Legislation, the Citizenship Law was passed, by a large majority, with one opponent and one abstention. But his test is in the Knesset, when the Arab factions will not vote in favor, and Shaked will need the opposition to pass the law.
The condition for a safety net for the Citizenship Law
Following today’s High Court ruling, Smutrich told Shaked the condition for a safety net on their part to pass the Citizenship Law: “Ayelet Shaked must decide whether she is accountable to the Islamic Movement or to the citizens of Israel,” the religious Zionist faction said.
“As we have said before, we are ready to be the national security network and vote with the Zionist elements in the coalition on the Citizenship Law with the addition of transparency and quotas. . “
The party added: “Israel’s security is too expensive for the games and history will not forgive Shaked if it continues to surrender to the supporters of terrorism in the USSR and the harm to the Jewish state.”
