Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of engaging in “ethnic cleansing” against the Armenian population in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “The intensity and ferocity of the offensive makes it clear that the intention is to complete the ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh,” Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan accused the Baku government on Thursday at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on the situation in the area.

According to Mirzoyan, there have been more than 200 dead and 400 wounded so far, including civilians, women and children. More than 10,000 people have been forcibly displaced, including women, children and the elderly, who are forced to live outdoors without food or other means of subsistence. Thousands of families have been separated. The situation had been alarming for a long time. But the international community refused to take the warning signs seriously enough.

The Armenian minister complained that the UN Security Council had not reacted appropriately in the past – now it finally had to act. “The rights and security of the Armenian people of Nagorno-Karabakh must be given due consideration and internationally guaranteed,” Mirzoyan demanded.

Authoritarian-run Azerbaijan began a broad military operation to conquer Nagorno-Karabakh on Tuesday morning. Although the region is located on Azerbaijani territory, the majority of it is inhabited by Armenians. The two former Soviet countries have been fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh for decades. The ceasefire after the last war in 2020, in which Azerbaijan, which was well-armed thanks to gas and oil revenues, had already conquered large parts of Karabakh, was repeatedly broken.
