Chennai: A rental car driver in Chennai received a text message on his phone stating that Rs 9 thousand crore had been deposited into his bank account, causing a huge sensation. Rajkumar, a 28-year-old from Neykarapatti village near Palani in Dindigul district, works as a rental car driver with his friends in Kodambakkam, Chennai.

Upon receiving the message, Rajkumar was unable to comprehend the amount due to the numerous zeros. He suspected that it may be a prank. However, upon further investigation, he discovered that the message was from the Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank, where he held an account, and that the staggering amount of Rs 9 thousand crore had indeed been credited to his account. Rajkumar then transferred Rs 21 thousand of this amount to his friend’s bank account, only to receive another message about the remaining balance.

In a shocking turn of events, the money was withdrawn from his account within 34 minutes. Bank officials later realized that Rajkumar had transferred Rs 21 thousand to another account. An official from the bank’s head office contacted him, revealing that the Rs 9,000 crore had been mistakenly deposited into his account and subsequently taken back.

In the midst of this ordeal, Rajkumar was threatened by another officer who demanded that he return the Rs 21 thousand or face the possibility of a police complaint and jail time. Fearing the consequences, Rajkumar sought out a lawyer and visited the Mercantile Bank branch in D. Nagar. After negotiations, both parties reached an amicable agreement. The bank officials informed Rajkumar that they would not ask him to return the money sent to his friend, and offered him a loan to purchase a car instead.

The bank officials attributed the incident to a technical glitch that led to the mistaken deposit of such a large sum of money. When asked about the incident, Rajkumar expressed his astonishment at receiving such a massive amount in his bank account. However, he soon became doubtful and sent Rs 21 thousand to his friend based on the advice of others. Soon after, he received two consecutive calls on his phone – one requesting him to return the money and another threatening legal action. Unfazed, Rajkumar visited the bank office in D. Nagar to provide an explanation.
