(Reuters) – Amazon (NASDAQ:) Prime Video users will see ads in shows and movies starting early next year unless they sign up for an ad-free plan, which will cost more, the giant said. of technology this Friday.

Amazon’s move follows similar launches from rivals Netflix (NASDAQ:) and Walt Disney (NYSE:).

The streaming sector has faced a slowdown in new subscriptions as consumers have reduced spending on entertainment and other discretionary expenses in the face of inflation and high interest rates.

The tech giant said the ads will run in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Canada in early 2024, followed by France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Australia later in the year.

Amazon will launch an ad-free subscription tier for an additional $2.99 ​​per month for Prime members in the United States. Currently, the subscription costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year.

The company added that it will share pricing for other countries at a later date.

Live event content such as sports will continue to include advertising even if the subscriber has paid for the ad-free plan, Amazon said.
