The federal government wants to reform prevention and communication on health issues and establish a new federal institute for public health. An important personnel has already been decided, the strategy remains unclear.

“Tina – how much do the condoms cost?” This question will be remembered by the Federal Center for Health Education (BZGA), which runs campaigns such as “Don’t power drugs”, “Don’t give AIDS a chance” or “Know your limit”. Prevention deserves it. During the pandemic it remained quiet, the Ministry of Health led by Jens Spahn took over most of the communication itself using expensive agencies. The work of the Cologne higher federal authority has recently often been criticized as sloppy; it only has a good 6,000 subscribers on YouTube, and many videos have a few hundred or a thousand views. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) was much more visible during the pandemic; it is responsible for specialist communication.

“Germany needs an agency for health communication,” said Gerd Gigerenzer, former head of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, with colleagues in the “Health Care” newspaper: Health literacy is far too low in this country. After the “failure of a coordinated information policy” during the pandemic, which contributed to deep uncertainty, the BZGA must be reorganized.
