BENI – The urban coordination of civil society in Beni, in the province of North Kivu, warns of the alarming conditions faced by detainees at the Kangbayi central prison.

Master Pepin Kavotha, president of the local forces, indicates that the prison population of Kangbayi faces a lack of food and health care. “These detainees have difficulty eating and do not have medicine for their health care,” he testifies.

Mr. Kavotha pleads for a general mobilization in order to save human lives in this prison. “We call on men of good will to come to the rescue of these people. The ration and medicines at the prison level would come from the central power, but the provincial government must not remain an observer of everything that happens,” he urges.

According to the report of the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) published on September 15, Kangbayi Prison recorded 17 cases of death between August and September 2023.
