Psychologist Sabrina recommends adopting a lifestyle with healthier habits that promote mental and physical health

In an increasingly fast-paced and competitive world, it is common for people to face challenges related to mental health. More than just tiredness caused by the work routine, Burnout Syndrome or Professional Exhaustion Syndrome is an emotional disorder, characterized by physical, emotional and cognitive symptoms, originating from the work environment.

Some individual behaviors can help prevent the development of burnout. Psychologist Sabrina Tardin Abreu, who leads the psychological care team at Amparo Saúde, the Sabin Group’s primary health care company, recommends adopting a lifestyle with healthier habits that promote mental and physical health.

“We can mention, for example, relaxation activities, quality of sleep, physical exercise, hobbies, practice of faith, regardless of the religion you practice, social connections, with neighborhood, family and friends, moderate diet, as well as the balance between professional and personal life. This all involves good time management, setting realistic goals, dividing tasks whenever possible, and the support of colleagues, friends or mental health professionals to share concerns and receive support”, he concludes.

This is a reality that affects the health and well-being of many professionals around the world. “There are people who resist and drag the situation on for a long time. And then extreme manifestations arise until these people are able to seek help, whether on their own initiative, referral from the company or advice from people close to them. Sometimes, it will be necessary to take time off work”, he highlights.

The specialist explains that some characteristics and symptoms are similar to other clinical conditions, therefore, only a mental health professional can distinguish a typical Burnout condition. “Every time an individual begins to experience anxiety, depression, deep sadness, irritability, the person must be aware that something is not going well. These are signs to seek help. Every symptom, no matter how bad it is, is a request for realignment by the individual,” she reflects.

The psychologist also explains that the body can present everything from physical to emotional signs. “Burnout Syndrome can cause frequent headaches, changes in appetite, insomnia, high blood pressure, muscle pain, gastrointestinal problems, changes in heart rate, feelings of failure and insecurity, constant negativity, feelings of defeat and hopelessness, feelings of incompetence , sudden changes in mood, isolation, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, among others”.

Therefore, recognizing early signs and seeking appropriate treatment are essential steps to overcoming this challenge. “Like any illness process, the sooner the syndrome is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. With adequate monitoring, the person suffering from burnout has the chance to give a new meaning to their life and even live better than they did before this condition”, he adds.

Treatment approaches may include psychotherapy, changes in the work environment to modify factors that contribute to burnout, self-care measures, focusing on relaxation strategies such as mindfulness, meditation and breathing techniques. In some cases, medications may be recommended to treat specific symptoms, such as anxiety or insomnia.
