A man, a Sudanese refugee, will be tried for the murder of Cyril Pierreval, head of the asylum center within the reception center for asylum seekers, before the Pau Assize Court. The victim reportedly died after being stabbed to death. On February 19, 2021, around 11 a.m., the man, now 40 years old, entered the Isard Cos reception center for asylum seekers (Cada) in Pau. Arriving in France in 2015, he obtained refugee status, in particular thanks to the help of Cyril Pierreval.

But a conviction for stabbing violence in 2017 called into question his status, granted by the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (Ofpra). It is with the intention of once again requesting helps Cyril Pierreval to go to his former reception center. The association worker replied that he was not able to help him renew his residence permit.

15 wounds on the victim’s body

The Sudanese then hits him several times with a knife he had on him. The autopsy revealed 15 stab wounds, half of which were in the thorax and one in the cervical area. The 46-year-old father died on the spot. Later, the indicted attacker explained that he held the association responsible for the non-renewal of his residence permit.

The Cos Foundation which manages this reception center, constituted as a civil party, “had nothing to do with the administrative situation of the alleged assassin”, comments Me Thierry Sagardoytho, his lawyer. The association “opened its door to help him, nothing justified this barbaric act”.

The victim’s partner will also be on the civil parties’ bench. “Cyril Pierreval’s work in the service of the most disadvantaged deserves a tribute to be paid to him through this trial,” adds the Foundation’s lawyer.

The attacker, known to the police for acts of violence, had already served a stint in prison but was unknown to the intelligence services. Contacted, his lawyer, Me Béatrice Spiteri-Vinci, did not make any comments before the hearing.

Long established in Pau, the Isard COS asylum seeker reception center has 257 places. It also offers accommodation in different areas of the city.
