Ukrainian servicemen are effectively countering Russian forces near the front line town of Bakhmut, utilizing heavy weapons supplied by the West, according to commanders on the ground. The ongoing battle for Bakhmut, which was captured by Russia in May, has seen Ukrainian troops relying heavily on equipment provided by the United States and its NATO allies.

Following the recent capture of the key village of Klishchiivka, Ukrainian commanders have praised the effectiveness of the 155 millimeter howitzers. These weapons have proven to be crucial in turning the tide against the Russian offensive. Commanders have particularly highlighted the importance of the Polish-made Krab gun and the U.S.-made M109 self-propelled howitzer.

According to one unit commander, identified only as Oleksandr, Ukraine’s armed forces heavily rely on heavy artillery. He stated, “Even one gun can completely turn the situation around. An attack can be stopped with one such gun.” Ongoing intelligence intercepts suggest that the Russian troops are greatly affected by the impact of Ukrainian heavy weaponry, raising questions about the amount of ammunition Ukraine has left.

The strategically located village of Klishchiivka, situated on the heights south of the devastated town of Bakhmut, has been an important stronghold for Russian forces. Ukrainian forces have successfully captured this strategic position, furthering their goal of reclaiming Bakhmut. Oleksandr expressed optimism for their future success and the development of their recent gains.

The successful capture of Klishchiivka and the nearby village of Andriivka mark significant achievements in Ukraine’s counteroffensive, which launched in June. Despite facing entrenched Russian lines, Ukrainian forces have made substantial progress in pushing back the Russian offensive. This progress has been hailed by Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and senior officials, as they reject criticisms from the West claiming the counteroffensive is progressing too slowly.

The use of heavy weapons provided by Western allies has proven to be a game-changer for Ukrainian forces in their battle against Russian aggression. These developments highlight the significance of international support in Ukraine’s ongoing fight for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
