INDIA – The legend of the white crocodile in the homeland that usually helps people in trouble instead of attacking them, really happened in India.

Scientists in India have observed a number of strange crocodile behaviors, such as rescuing a stray dog that was being chased by other dogs, until it got stuck in a river.

Instead of eating the dog, three crocodiles appeared to push it back to the river bank.

“The crocodile guided the dog away from a location that was vulnerable to attack by a group of wild dogs waiting on the river bank,” wrote the researcher, quoted from Livescience on Friday (22/9/2023).

“The crocodiles simply touched the dog with their snouts and encouraged him to move further so he could climb safely on the river bank and eventually escape.”

The researchers interpreted this action as an act of empathy indicating that the crocodile may be concerned about the dog’s safety.

“While it is interesting that crocodiles are capable of empathy for other species,” said Duncan Leitch, a biologist specializing in reptile neurophysiology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Research also revealed other strange behavior of crocodiles hunting in groups using sticks as bait to attract storks and egrets and showing interest in flower bouquets floating in the river.

In recent studies, several cluster events were also found crocodile swim and circle around schools of fish, thus creating a vortex. Their movements ultimately paralyze the fish. “Crocodiles do have a sophisticated set of behaviours,” says Duncan Leitch.
