One community, two clubs: Abersee is number one after decades of drought.

28 years after the last derby in which championship points were at stake, Abersee defeated local rivals Strobl 4-0 in the 2nd Regional League North on Saturday in front of 800 spectators. “It’s crazy for the whole club. It’s something to enjoy,” says coach Jürgen Wüstenhagen. The other side was also impressed. “That was a brilliant derby. We need games like this more often in the league – with a different winner, of course,” emphasizes Strobl’s section manager Johannes Eisl.

The visiting team, whose head coach was named Drazen Svalina 28 years ago, dominated the game for long stretches, but always struggled against the Aberseers’ strong defense. The home team, for their part, came to the opposing goal with a lot of force and used standard situations to take an early lead. Beniamin Tescu, who suffered a strain when he scored and had to be substituted, and Ebrima Ndure, who scored a remarkable overhead kick, made it 2-0.

Afterwards, Abersee captain Gerd Stadlmann made a desperate save from the line. On the other hand, Manuel Braunstein made it 3-0 after a crossbar header from ex-Strobler Markus Urthaler. “We wanted to play football, but Abersee stopped that with tough duels and was brutally effective. We wouldn’t have scored in 180 minutes,” says Eisl, whose team tried everything in the second half. Despite being outnumbered – Timo Goritschnig saw yellow and red – they conceded their fourth goal. Ndure finished after a dribble to make it the final score. “A real derby that had everything it needed,” says Wüstenhagen. His team is now five points ahead of Strobl.
