London: An 18-million-year-old giant sea dragon fossil has been unearthed in Britain. The 10-meter-long fossil weighs about a ton. The remains were discovered by Joe David, leader of the Rutland Water Conservation Team. Later, the paleontologist Dr. A team led by Dean Lomax excavated here. Dr Dean Lomax, who led the excavations, said he thought the skeletons of whales and dolphins had been found in the area before. However, detailed examination revealed that the ichthyosaur, which resembled dolphins, was in the fossil record. They have sharp teeth and eyes and are popularly known as the ‘Sea Dragon’. Fossils of large and small ichthyosaurs have also been found during the construction of Rutland Reservoir in the 1970s. Ectosaurus species that lived about 250 million years ago are thought to have become extinct about 90 million years ago. They are usually said to be up to 25 m long. Researchers claim that Ictosor is the largest fossil ever found. Fossils of ectosaurs have been found in various parts of the UK for over two hundred years.
