It’s the triennial excitement. Duplex, direct, guests on set, live monitoring on the website and almost the entire editorial team mobilized… For weeks now, Public Senate has been preparing for the day of September 24, to cover the senatorial elections which must renew half of Senate seats. Unlike general 24-hour news channels which do not provide any particular arrangements, their parliamentary cousin will be in a special edition all day long.

And for good reason : “The senatorials are our Cannes Festival”, the channel’s journalists like to say. “It’s a great moment for the editorial team which is then in turmoil, the culmination for the journalists who worked like crazy in advance to prepare for the day”remembers a former presenter who worked there for years.

On those Sundays, says another journalist who has been working on the subject since the spring, “we feel the pressure building all day long, the calm of the palace is a little disrupted and there is always a special atmosphere in the conference room”this large gilded gallery where journalists and elected officials meet and where the results will be displayed on large panels put out for the occasion.

Last national election before 2026

The event will be all the more special for the channel as it will also be the first major opportunity to showcase the new studio and its sets, which have just returned to the basement of the Luxembourg Palace after work. As always, part of the stage will also be relocated to the heart of the conference room, to be as close as possible to the “action”.

Even if there is no big issue this year (unlike 2020, the president of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, is not putting his senatorial seat back at stake and the majority should not change), Public Senate expects like every three years to do “a good score and a peak audience on the website and on the channel”predicts Perrine Tarneaud, its information director.

Paradoxically, the absence of major issues could even benefit the channel, whose expertise will be more important than ever to decipher the subtle changes in balance following the results. Especially since the senatorial elections constitute the only election of the year and the last national vote until the municipal elections of 2026 – unless dissolved.

Sunday, two live slots are planned: between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. for the first results from overseas and the first round in the departments with a two-round majority vote, then from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. for the complete results. The special edition will continue the following days, with portraits of new senators, then to follow live the election of the president (Monday October 2), the composition of the groups (October 3), that of the commissions and the appointment of others positions of responsibility (October 4).
