International Medical Conference on “Uncovering the Secrets of Gut Health”

Last Tuesday, the Saudi Society of Family and Community Medicine hosted an international medical conference titled “Unlocking the Secrets of Gut Health.” The conference, sponsored by Jamjoom Pharma and organized by the Expertise Forum, focused on the uses of probiotics in primary health care practices.

Prominent doctors from different countries were invited to speak at the conference, including Dr. Matthew Tracy from the United States, Professor Myeong Soo Park from South Korea, and Dr. Abdel Halim Al-Sharif from Egypt. The conference aimed to discuss the latest developments in probiotics and their role in maintaining gut health.

Dr. Ashraf Amir, the conference chairman and Vice President of the Saudi Society of Family and Community Medicine, emphasized the importance of probiotics in primary health care. Probiotics, which are live bacteria and yeasts, help restore the balance of bacteria in the digestive tract and have various health benefits. They play a crucial role in promoting digestion, aiding in vitamin absorption, and strengthening the immune system.

Dr. Amir highlighted two types of beneficial bacteria, namely the “Lacto bisilicum” group found in yogurt and milk, and the “Bifido” bacteria that protect the intestinal system from infections and relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. These bacteria help maintain the balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria in the digestive system, enhance the immune system, and improve overall health.

Probiotics can be found in several food sources, including yogurt, milk, pickles, sourdough, and miso soup. Dr. Amir reassured that there are no harmful side effects of beneficial bacteria, although some individuals might experience temporary gas or diarrhea when first introducing probiotics to their diet.

Dr. Matthew Tracy, the Director of the Center for Functional Medicine and Wellness at the International Medical Center, discussed the mechanism of administering probiotics. He emphasized that probiotics positively regulate the intestinal microbial composition and have proven health benefits when taken in appropriate doses. He also highlighted the therapeutic potential of “Probiotic VSL#3,” a mixture of eight live bacterial strains that have shown positive effects in various systemic diseases.

The overuse of antibiotics was also discussed at the conference, with Dr. Tracy warning about the detrimental effects of antibiotics on beneficial bacteria. Excessive antibiotic use can lead to an imbalance in the gut microbiome and increase the risk of various diseases, such as type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, allergies, asthma, and obesity.

Professor Myeong Soo Park, CEO of the South Korean company “Bifido” Ltd., presented the latest study on the microbiome and the development of probiotics. The study revealed the importance of Bifidobacterium bacteria for intestinal and whole-body health. It emphasized the need to restore the levels of Bifidobacterium in the intestines, especially in the elderly, as the decrease in these bacteria can lead to various diseases.

Professor Park mentioned a group of probiotics called “PROLIFE” available in Saudi Arabia. These probiotics, such as PROLIFE Premium and PROLIFE SHIELD, contain a synergistic combination of probiotics and prebiotics, which enhance the natural balance of beneficial bacteria in the intestines and support the digestive system.

The International Medical Conference on “Uncovering the Secrets of Gut Health” provided valuable insights into the benefits of probiotics and their role in primary health care practices. It highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy gut for overall well-being and emphasized the potential therapeutic applications of probiotics in various diseases.]
