For one month, the Angra 2 Nuclear Power Plant will be disconnected from the National Interconnected System. The shutdown is scheduled to begin on Monday 25th and will occur due to scheduled maintenance of the installation.
The nuclear plant is in the municipality of Angra dos Reis, in Rio de Janeiro. It has been in activity since 2001.
According to the Electronuclear, during the shutdown period, 28 tons of uranium used to generate electrical energy was exchanged, among other adjustments and maintenance. The procedure must use five thousand Brazilian and foreign professionals, according to the G1.
During the month set aside for repairs, teams will work 24 hours a day, at alternating times. In addition to carrying out maintenance on equipment, the break is used to carry out inspections on mechanisms that cannot be isolated during the plant’s operation.
Shutdowns at the facility run every 14 months. The work is organized at least one year in advance and aligns with the useful life of uranium for the energy generation process.
The Angra 2 Nuclear Power Plant
Construction of the Angra 2 Nuclear Power Plant began in 1981. Thus, it took 20 years until the installation began operating. It was born from an agreement that Brazil and Germany signed in 1975. Between 1986 and 1994, work was stopped.
Currently, the installation has the capacity to produce enough energy to serve a city with 2 million inhabitants.

“The construction of Angra 2 led to the transfer of technology to Brazil, which led the country to its own technological development, which resulted in dominance over practically all stages of nuclear fuel manufacturing”, states Eletronuclear. It is part of a complex designed to operate three plants. The other two are Angra 1 (in operation since 1985) and Angra 3 (still under construction).
