An innovative initiative aimed at strengthening the resilience of vulnerable populations in southern Madagascar. This four-year project, bringing together the government, the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KFW), the World Food Program and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), was officially presented yesterday. This initiative will help prevent all forms of malnutrition and reach 106,650 vulnerable people in the south of Madagascar.

This multi-sectoral project benefits from support of 28.5 million euros from KFW. It is implemented by the two UN agencies in three communes: Itampolo in the Ampanihy district, Sihanamaro in the Ambovombe district, Tsivory and Ifotaka in the Amboasary district. The combined effects of three consecutive years of drought had reduced agricultural production in the southern part of Madagascar and the areas concerned by the project in particular.

Social and behavioral change activities for the adoption of appropriate practices will cover 88,650 people including 43,439 men, 45,212 women at the community level, including school-age children.

Resilient and sustainable WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) services will be provided to 45,800 children, women and their families, 12 schools and health centers, totaling 3,000 sites. 5,500 mothers and caregivers will be referred for acute malnutrition screening and 7,978 children with severe acute malnutrition will be screened and treated in accordance with the national protocol. 4,700 pregnant women will be administered multiple micronutrient supplements. 16,700 children aged 6 to 59 months will receive vitamin A supplements twice a year and 14,500 children aged 12 to 59 months will be dewormed twice a year.

In addition, 17,000 mothers and caregivers of children aged 0 to 59 months will benefit from advice on infant and young child feeding (IYCF) as well as on early childhood development.
