Liverpool moved up to second place in the English Championship, after beating West Ham 3-1 this Sunday (24), at Anfield, in the sixth round, in which Chelsea suffered their third defeat of the season, falling at home to Aston Villa 1-0.

With their victory, the ‘Reds’ (16 points) are the only team following behind leaders Manchester City (18 points), who on Saturday defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 and maintained a 100% record in six games.

Arsenal (5th) and Tottenham (4th) had started the day level on points with Liverpool, as City’s three closest pursuers, but they drew 2-2 in this Sunday’s north London derby and are now four points behind leadership.

“It’s a classic, they’re always tough games. I think we played a fantastic game, we gave everything and the fans can feel proud,” Spurs striker Son Heung-min told Sky Sports.

“The players’ attitude was phenomenal, but they needed to control the ball better against a good team”, said the Gunners’ coach, Mikel Arteta,

Both Arsenal and Tottenham were overtaken by Brighton (3rd, 15 points), who beat Bournemouth (17th) 3-0, with two goals from Japanese Kaoru Mitoma.

Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over the ‘Hammers’ took place in the second half.

In the first half, Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for the ‘Reds’ with a penalty kick (16′) and Jarrod Bowen equalized for the visitors (42′).

After the break, German coach Jürgen Klopp’s team regained the lead on the scoreboard with Uruguayan Darwin Núñez (60), taking advantage of an assist from Argentine Alexis Mac Allister, before Portuguese Diogo Jota sealed the victory in the final stretch of the match (85′ ).

“We’ve worked really hard and everyone can see how we’ve improved since the start of the season,” commented Mac Allister after the match.

At the bottom of the table, Chelsea (14th) continues without taking off this season and was defeated this Sunday, at Stamford, Bridge by Aston Villa (6th), who got the three points thanks to Ollie Watkins’ goal (73′).

In yet another bad game in the championship, the ‘Blues’ were left with ten men for almost the entire second half, after the expulsion of Frenchman Malo Gusto (58′).

This is Chelsea’s third defeat in six rounds, a record that increases the pressure on Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino, who took over the team in June with the mission of putting it back in the fight for titles after a disappointing season, in which the London team finished the Premier League in 12th place.

“We have to be aware of what is happening, but we have to be calm,” commented Pochettino. “The team is fighting, we can’t say they gave up after 70 minutes, they fought with one player less. I hope we can reverse this sequence as quickly as possible.”

In the last game this Sunday, Newcastle (8th) overpowered the now bottom team Sheffield United away from home with an 8-0 rout, with Brazilian Bruno Guimarães scoring the team’s seventh goal.

The result gives morale to the ‘Magpies’, who in the next ten days will have important games against Manchester City, on Wednesday, for the English League Cup; Burnley, next Saturday, in the Premier League; and Paris Saint-Germain, on October 4th, in the Champions League.
