Five months since the conflict paralyzed Hollywood. The screenwriters’ union, the WGA, reached an agreement in principle with the studios on Sunday which could end the strike, according to a letter sent to its members, seen by AFP.

“We have reached an agreement in principle on a new (minimum basic agreement) 2023, i.e. an agreement in principle on all points of the agreement, subject to the final wording of the contract,” indicates the letter.

The WGA, which represents 11,500 film and television screenwriters, called the deal “outstanding” with “significant gains and protections for screenwriters.”

Since mid-July, actors have also been on strike, which paralyzes the vast majority of film and television series production in the United States. At the beginning of September, the Financial Times reported a study by the Milken Institute which estimated the cost of this double social movement, unseen since 1960, at $5 billion for the Californian economy.

Screenwriters and actors share similar demands. The sharing of revenues linked to streaming remains the crux of the matter: they want to be able to earn much more when one of their films or series is a hit on a platform, instead of receiving a lump sum payment, generally quite low, regardless of popularity. from the program.
