From the Sanhedrin to the “Page blanket”

“The politics of this country are not for tamayazos.” This is how Page closes the diatribe open these days that places him at the center of his party against the amnesty that Pedro Sánchez could negotiate with Puigdemont. He does not play transfuguismo, but he does play with the rest of the elements that place him as a bulwark of those other socialist positions that do not accept the millstones that could appear as soon as Feijóo fails in his investiture, scheduled for this week.

Emiliano García-Page has oscillated in recent days between a markedly regional agenda – with the meeting of all his councilors for a couple of days locked up, in what has been periodically called the Sanhedrin – and another purely and clearly national one, with his participation at the presentation of the Guerra book with the most critical voices of socialism against Pedro Sánchez’s amnesty for Puigdemont.

To add additions to several days of vertigo, Page met with the King last Wednesday, within the usual round of contacts that Felipe VI maintains with the different institutions of the country, including regional governments. Someone titled or thought about titling the meeting as “A Real Concern,” which was then followed by the presentation of Guerra’s book. There were concerns there.

As a corollary, Feijóo called Page last Thursday to gauge his opinion on current national issues and also those of the autonomous community, ahead of the investiture debate. According to sources from the Fuensalida Palace, the conversation lasted about ten minutes, was correct and friendly, in an atmosphere of cordiality and, of course, the question of a possible flight of votes from the socialists of Castilla-La Mancha was not raised, ” because we would not have even allowed it.”

In this sense, in an interview later carried out with the Ser channel, Page remarked that “whoever plays that the PP’s lack of votes is compensated by PSOE turncoats, may find them but I do not protect them… Spanish politics is not for tamayazos.”

And his presence at the presentation of the War book with the most critical voices of the PSOE against the amnesty continues to generate rivers of ink. The words of Felipe González arguing that “as things go, either we get into García-Page’s blanket or I don’t know where we are going to go” were the definitive flash to dazzle those who might get lost.

Because of all the critical voices that arise in the PSOE against the amnesty of the authors of the ‘procés’, the only one that is active and exercising its authority with full powers is that of Emiliano García-Page. He is the only socialist baron who retains an absolute majority after the May disaster in the communities governed by the PSOE. And he owes his position, paradoxically, to the fact that he has been the most critical of all against Pedro Sánchez’s positions, especially regarding pardons and reductions in penalties for embezzlement and sedition. He now also with the amnesty.

Page’s political career began very early in the shadow of Bono and there he learned how to intervene in and influence national politics. In the PP of the region they criticize that she then does not want to talk about these issues in the regional Parliament, but Page manages the times and the senses. If she speaks or says something national, she does it in that other daily parliament that is that of the press and whose echo and repercussion is even greater. That’s why he bothers Moncloa and Ferraz so much.

Thus, the drift that national politics may take in the coming days, if Feijóo’s investiture fails, will also be marked by Page’s criticism of an agreement between Sánchez and Puigdemont that includes the amnesty. His position within the party is too strong to take measures of any kind and he will continue to be the Chinese in Sánchez’s shoe.

The PP asks him for one more step, but he refuses to act as a turncoat. Him or his. What he does not give up is saying what he thinks and does not like, from the Sanhedrin with his advisors in Castilla-La Mancha or in the Madrid forum with Guerra, González, Ibarra and Terreros. Who was a child when he won FG, now that he is older he is his blanket.
