The daily Právo reported this week that the STAN movement believes that, on the basis of agreements from the period when the cabinet was formed, it determines the proposal for the European Commissioner itself. According to the Pirates, the agreement is that the representatives in the European Commission should propose together.
“Prime Minister Petr Fiala clearly confirmed that this is about the nomination of the electoral coalition Pirates and STAN,” Richter said. The two entities ran together in the parliamentary elections two years ago.
The pirates also started the election of a candidate for the European Commission on their internet forum last week. Proposals can be submitted until October 1, nominees will have another two weeks to think about it, after which a two-round election will take place. Any member or registered supporter of the party can run for office.
Vondra: A strong portfolio is essential
Vondra noted that even according to his information from the Prime Minister, both parties have the right to nominate a candidate. The government will then deal with the proposal.
According to the vice-chairman of the ODS, it is essential that the Czech Republic acquires a strong portfolio. It would be the first time, he thinks. According to him, the portfolio should be in line with Czech interests and relate to the economy, energy or, for example, diplomacy.
Who will replace Věra Jourová in the EU executive will become clear after the European Parliament elections next spring. Jourová has represented the Czech Republic in the European Commission since 2014, and is the vice-chairwoman of Ursula von der Leyen’s current commission.
She is the European Commissioner for Values and Transparency, but now she is also involved in the management and coordination of the Europe Ready for the Digital Age program. He is now in charge of a part of the portfolio after European Commissioner for Economic Competition Margrethe Vestagerová, who wants to run for the position of president of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and has taken unpaid leave.
In the past, the Czech commissioners were Pavel Telička, Vladimír Špidla and Štefan Füle.
