According to the EVG railway union, there is a risk of massive staff cuts in Deutsche Bahn’s freight transport division. 1,800 employees are affected. “The board members make mistakes and our colleagues should pay the price. We are resolutely opposing this!” announced EVG deputy chairwoman Cosima Ingenschay. A reduction in personnel could not be the solution to DB Cargo’s economic difficulties.

The freight transport sector generates significant losses and has long been considered a worry area in the state-owned company. According to the plans, the aim is to be back in the black in 2024. The management around Cargo CEO Sigrid Nikutta is looking for savings options, including in the administrative area.

The number of 1,800 affected positions is neither officially confirmed nor denied by the railway. When asked, a company spokesman referred to ongoing discussions and simply said that the decisive course for the transformation of DB Cargo would now be set by the board of directors with the employees and the company’s committees. “The specific design is currently being coordinated in various internal working groups.”

There was already speculation about job cuts in July

The company is trying to make it clear that the goods division, which has 20,000 employees in Germany, is not about a break-up or mass layoffs and social plans, but simply about structural changes. In addition, DB offers a huge job market and the industry is growing. At the beginning of the year, the group announced that it was planning a total of more than 25,000 new hires for 2023 and would ultimately create around 9,000 additional jobs.

In July, Cargo boss Nikutta rejected speculation in media reports about massive job cuts. These unsettled employees as well as customers. However, she had already made it clear back then that the board was continuing a transformation plan with the aim of making Europe’s largest freight railway sustainable and economically viable.
