The metaphor, approved and relayed by Jean-Luc Mélenchon on the same social network, led to strong indignation on the left.
“Roussel is not Doriot. Debate is not boxing”denounced the socialist leader, Olivier Faure. “Stop, it doesn’t matter if we love each other or not, between partners, we respect each other”continued the president of the environmental group in the National Assembly, Cyrielle Chatelain. “Stop the fire”, added La France insoumise (LFI) MP from Seine-Saint-Denis Clémentine Autain, in more or less direct opposition to the leadership of her party. Fabien Roussel denounced “a call to violence” et “to hatred”scandalized to be “compared to a Nazi”.

Discredit your partners
The offense endorsed by Jean-Luc Mélenchon should further deepen the divide which is tearing apart the New Ecological and Social Popular Union (Nupes). For months now, the three-time presidential candidate has been exacerbating tensions within the left-wing alliance. This summer, he was the first to cite the collaborationist in a particularly virulent blog post against his left-wing partners. “Like every time, the left never gets through the ordeal remaining unscathed! Anathema is not new. “When, on the left, we are not happy with a rival, we say “it’s Doriot, it’s Déat”. This was already the case against Chevènement, considered the patriot of service in the 1980s., notes historian Laurent Joly, specialist in the Vichy period. The CNRS research director recalls that Jacques Doriot moved to the extreme right after being excluded from the PCF. “Its fascist drift is really linked to the Occupation, which remains a dark stain on our history”he finishes.
