Due to the rainy season, the country has suffered from severe floods

The Civil Defense of Guatemala reported this Monday (25), that at least 3 people died, and 15 were missing as a result of the flood that hit the country’s capital, La Nueva Guatemala de la Asuncíon, in the early hours of this Monday ( 25). Heavy rains caused flooding, which destroyed six houses in the center.

According to the spokesperson for the Disaster Reduction Coordination (Conred), Rodolfo García, the El Naranjo River overflowed its banks and “swept away houses from the Dios Es Fiel settlement, located below the bridge.”

Garcia also adds that the rescue brigades, supported by sniffer dogs, located the three bodies, one of the victims being a child between 3 and 5 years old.

The country is experiencing a rainy season, which began in May and is expected to last until November. To date, around 29 people have died as a result of heavy rains, 2.1 million have been affected and 10,303 people have been evacuated from their homes. The rains also destroyed four highways and nine bridges.

Due to the poverty that plagues the country, many houses in the capital dump waste into the El Naranjo River, in addition to thousands of people building their homes on the banks, even though it is prohibited. The Guatemalan Chamber of Construction (CGC) and the National Association of Home Builders (Anacovi) show that the country’s housing deficit is around 2 million homes.

The flood caused a flood that swept away stones, earth and rubbish. Most of the homes affected by the water were made of zinc sheets. The place was destroyed, leaving only stones and debris.
