This September 19, the Higher Polytechnic School of Chimborazo (Espoch) completed its admission process and allocation of places for the 2023-2024 academic period. The process that began in the month of July was carried out with efficiency and transparency according to the Director of Admission and Leveling of the institution, Germán Patricio Torres.

The process had four phases: registration, evaluation and selection of applicants, publication of results and confirmation of assignment and enrollment. In the process, around 9,300 applicants from all over the country registered, however, the institution offered 2,200 places, of which 1,781 were assigned.

The acceptance of places was governed according to several factors: the student’s score, the result of the average of the degree grade and the evaluation applied by ESPOCH; the score awarded by SENECYT according to affirmative action policies; and career priority. According to the director, students were allowed to apply for five majors in the first two applications and three in the last. At the time of assignment, everything would have depended on the available quotas and the number of applicants with their respective scores since no minimum score was recorded. “We are pleased that the planning has had a great effect and we have achieved the appropriate results within the admission process,” said Torres.

However, students have expressed concerns regarding the application process and allocation of places. Some allege that there were logistical and technical problems during the evaluation and that the university’s communication was not clear at some stages of the process. One of the students, Hana F., expressed her dissatisfaction: “some people with lower scores were accepted, and those of us who had better scores were left in limbo.” In addition, she stated that there would have been no detailed information about how the application for the five races was going to work, so some “had the luxury” of rejecting them.

Despite the inconveniences, Espoch University will continue with the registration process and subsequent start of classes in October.
