The items—intended for communities in need—included 66 tons of wheat flour, 2,700 kilograms of salt, 450 kilograms of dried yeast and 375 liters of sunflower oil.

That same Saturday, an ICRC team carried out the medical evacuation of 17 people injured during the clashes. The team delivered medical supplies and body bags to the local hospital for the dignified management of the remains.

This humanitarian work is possible thanks to the ICRC’s role as a neutral intermediary. The organization engages in conversations with all parties to an armed conflict to gain acceptance and carry out its life-saving activities for as many victims of violence as possible.

Despite a recent cessation of hostilities, the humanitarian consequences of the military escalation are being keenly felt throughout the region. Many are searching for family members with whom they have lost contact, including unaccompanied children. There are displaced communities and people asking for assistance to bury their deceased loved ones, and everything is made more difficult by the lack of electricity, basic products and access to medical care.

In view of the magnitude of humanitarian needs, the ICRC is expanding its presence in the region, adding personnel specialized in health, forensic services, protection and weapons contamination.
