JobatOf course, every profession is tough at times. Some days a little more than others. But when is your profession officially considered ‘heavy’? And how does this ensure that you can retire earlier in the public sector? Jobat.be looked into it.

The short answer

Check whether your job is included in the list of demanding professions for the public sector. This list arose from social consultations between the unions and the government, to determine who is allowed to retire early. How much earlier this can be done depends on the severity level stated for the profession.

Early retirement: from when can you actually take early retirement and what are the rules?

What makes a profession difficult?

At least, according to those who drew up the list? In concrete terms, a profession is difficult if it meets four criteria. This concerns:
• physically demanding work.
• in a stressful work organization.
• with increased safety risks.
• and with mental or emotional strain.

Important to know: the fourth criterion only counts if you also meet other criteria. In other words: your job can never be a tough profession just because it is mentally or emotionally taxing. Or at least not according to that official list.

What are the tough professions?

The toughest professions are soldiers, police officers or auxiliary officers, professional firefighters (who directly participate in firefighting), pilots and nautical and air traffic controllers, who effectively and directly manage maritime or air traffic. These professions meet the four criteria.

We find many other heavy professions on the railways, for example: driving staff, Securail safety officers, track workers, staff working on the overhead lines and employees in the signal boxes. But also garbage collectors, civilian staff at the military security service, field staff at state security, penitentiary officers, operational staff of civil protection and of course all kinds of employees in the healthcare sector have a tough job. They meet three of the four criteria.

How much pension will you receive later? This is how you make the calculation.

How much earlier can you retire?

As we already mentioned, the list only applies to heavy professions in the public sector. There is no such list for the private sector.

If you are a statutory or contractual government employee and your profession is listed, you will accelerate the required career years to retire. How much faster depends on the number of criteria your work meets:
• 1 criterion: years actually worked x 1.05.
• 2 criteria: years actually worked x 1.10.
• 3 or 4 criteria: years actually worked x 1.15.

In other words: if you worked in a demanding profession for 30 years that met three criteria, on paper you have already built up a career of 34.5 years. This means you can retire earlier if you are at least sixty years old or older. Keep in mind that your pension amount is still calculated based on your actual number of years worked. In addition, you must have worked in your heavy profession for at least ten years.
