The government representative, Pavlos Marinakis, was asked to comment on the election of Stefanos Kasselakis to the presidency of SYRIZA, in a radio interview.
“If we can judge from the first moves and the choices of persons of the new president, I think that the new era begins with the oldest materials and, in fact, with people who are usually associated with a ‘trend’ – if you can say that this – which expressed much more the mud and the divisive and toxic discourse”, said Mr. Marinakis characteristically.
Speaking to Real FM, he noted that the government congratulated the new leader of SYRIZA “and now”, as he said, “we are now waiting to hear the formulation of specific positions and proposals, because our confrontation with him will obviously be political, as with the official opposition, and we expect – without being optimistic – that it will leave the path of toxicity and divisive discourse”.
“The first options do not seem to confirm the so new, it seems more old to me, but, obviously, everything will be decided along the way,” the government spokesman added.

As he said, “in any area of our everyday life and in politics, we should not underestimate or overestimate anyone or anything. Everyone must be judged by the result.”
And he meaningfully added that communication “is one of the very important aspects of politics, because through communication citizens can learn what you say, what you do, what you want to do, your account and your planning, your ideas your thoughts, as long as there is content. Whether or not there is content, which is much more important than communication itself, remains to be seen in practice.”
“You know, like everyone else, we watched the pre-election period of SYRIZA, an internal party process. In no case, we did not intervene with any statement. It was a purely internal party process. It remains to be seen whether there are positions, what those positions are and how these positions can be implemented,” the government spokesman said.

He repeated the wish “that the country acquires a reliable and serious official opposition which will, obviously, also harshly criticize the government”, stressing that this is how democracies work.

And now let’s stop this very ugly cycle, of having an opposition that “throws stones” out of safety, that questions reality itself, that constantly circulates fake news. This definitely hurt the country and, as it has been proven, in the previous four years, it did not benefit the main opposition party at all,” he noted.
For him to conclude that he is neither competent to give advice, nor is it his role, but neither do SYRIZA expect him to give advice…
“We are simply making findings based on reality. So, let’s see what the new president of SYRIZA has to say about all the major issues that concern society, the citizens, about what he wants to do, what he has to propose and based on these we will make the political confrontation Pavlos Marinakis said.
