Robert Garrabé, PS vice-president of the Pyrénées-Orientales departmental council is not a senator. He came in third position in the second round (462 votes, 36.93%) behind the two Les Républicains candidates. Lauriane Josende (662 votes, 52.92%) is the former deputy of François Calvet who did not stand for re-election. The second elected is the outgoing senator Jean Sol (591 votes, 47.24%). Charles Pons, deputy mayor of Perpignan, comes in fourth position (186 votes, 14.87%) under the colors of the National Rally while the presence in the Catalan municipalities is very insufficient to be able to hope for an elected official.

The solid and long-standing local roots of the two new senators from the Catalan Republican right surely played a role in their victory. Lauriane Josende, 45 years old, vigorously supported by François Calvet, has in fact led her entire career with elected officials, after starting as general secretary of the assembly of mayors of the Pyrénées-Orientales, municipal elected officials providing the bulk of the battalion of large voters.

“There was no clash with the socialists”

But a scattered left party in the second round found itself in difficulty. Sunday at the time of Catalan cream, the communist candidates (Lola Beuze 140 votes) and LFI (Marc Panis 80 votes) had in fact decided to stay in the race after a first round which already established the strong positions: Lauriane Josende , Jean Sol and Robert Garrabé.

“In agreement with the socialists, we maintained a single candidate, Lola Beuze, to prevent votes from our camp from being lost on right-wing candidates,” explains Nicolas Garcia, the leader of the communists of the Pyrenees. Orientales and first vice-president of the department chaired by the socialist Hermeline Malherbe. “In the second round, each of the department’s 1,284 electors could slip two ballots into the same envelope, since there were then two senatorial positions to be filled. There was no clash with the socialists. We are just seeing the weakening of the PS. »

For the departmental left, this is the third electoral defeat since the arrival of Louis Aliot (RN) as mayor of Perpignan in 2020. And above all, since the legislative elections of 2022, which saw the sometimes large defeat of left-wing candidates in the four constituencies. The teams are now heading towards the next territorial deadlines: 2026 the municipal elections and 2028 the cantonal elections.
