Monday September 25, Spotify launched its “Voice Translation” program based on voice imitation technology developed by OpenAI (ChatGPT). The idea is simple: translate your podcasts with artificial intelligence, so that everyone can listen to what they want in their native language.

In his press release, the Swedish giant explains that it wants to “bridge the linguistic gap” so that its podcasters “can be heard around the world”. This is the “Voice Translation” project: “a revolutionary function powered by AI [développée par Open AI – NDLR]which translates podcasts into other languages, while keeping the characteristics of the original voice.”

An announcement which risks endangering voice actors, although the latter are not yet very active in the podcast world.

In any case, Spotify is on the job. Indeed, the first three episodes have already been released, all translated from English to Spanish:

Lex Fridman Podcast – “Interview with Yuval Noah Harari”
Armchair Expert – “Kristen Bell, by the grace of god, returns”
The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett – “Interview with Dr. Mindy Pelz”

This is a new step in the digitalization of society, significantly accelerated by the performance of AI, but it is clear that the result is impressive.

While there is only Spanish for now, the company says it plans to release German and French translations in the coming days. And “this is just the beginning”: “We’re excited to empower creators to bring their stories to more listeners around the world. Reactions from creators and audiences to the outcome of the pilot project will provide important information for future extensions, iterations and innovations.”, reports the press release.
