The WhatsApp messenger (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and is banned) will be supported only on Android operating systems (OS) version 5.0 (released in 2014) and higher. The changes will come into force on October 24, it follows from information on his website.

It is clarified that the management of the messenger determines every year “which devices and software with the least number of users can be considered obsolete.” These devices, in particular, may not have the latest security updates or features required by WhatsApp, such as the ability to receive SMS or calls for number verification.

Until the changes come into force, owners of Android smartphones with OS version 4.1 and higher can use WhatsApp. After October 24, OS versions 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4 will no longer have access to the application. The total number of their users exceeds 1 million, notes “Gazeta.ru”.

The history of Android is in the material of Kommersant.
