Sony has begun an investigation to clarify an alleged attack by the cybercriminal group Ransomed.vc, which claims to have hacked all of the company’s systems, compromising 6,000 files that they intend to put up for sale.
The group of malicious actors, which calls itself Ransomed.vc, has proclaimed itself the author of a ‘ransomware’ cyber attack aimed at Sony, in which it claims to have “successfully” compromised all of the company’s systems. Furthermore, the attackers have explained in a notification that, since “Sony does not want to pay”, they intend to sell the data.

This has been learned by the specialized media Cyber Security Connect, which has also detailed that it is a new group of cybercriminals that has begun to attack this month of September.
In this sense, the same medium has verified that cybercriminals have included access to some Sony data as proof that the attack was real. These include material such as screenshots of a Sony home page, an internal company PowerPoint presentation, and a series of Java data files. As shown by the malicious actors, they have accessed around 6,000 files.
Ransomed.vc has not shared a purchase price for these files, but has left a Telegram contact and email in case someone wants to make the purchase.
In this context, the Japanese company has communicated that they are currently investigating “the situation” and that, for the moment, they have no further comments, as they have stated to the IGN media. For its part, Ransomed.vc has assured that it will publish all the data next Thursday, September 28 in case it does not find a buyer.
However, cybersecurity experts such as Kaspersky’s principal security researcher, Marc Rivero, have stated that “it is still early to draw conclusions” based solely on the statements of cybercriminals.
Likewise, Rivero has detailed that data breaches “represent an enormous challenge for any company” and that the first step is to “thoroughly investigate the alleged leak.” He has also stressed that on some occasions the leak may be false and a hoax by the attackers to “gain publicity.”
“In other words, a company needs to gather evidence to confirm that the attack is real and that the data has been compromised,” stated Rivero, while recalling the importance of companies protecting themselves “proactively” against to these types of threats.
How to protect your PlayStation console and account from cyberattacks?
To protect your console, the company recommends following these steps in an applied manner.
The first thing is that the Play console must be updated, so that it can have the latest security patches provided by Sony. This way you can apply to the second step, which is to make secure downloads of exclusive content from the PlayStore and not from other places.
As a third recommendation, activate parental control, so you can prevent minors from using the console and making unauthorized purchases. Finally, they advise taking care of the physical condition of the Play, so that it is away from damage that could affect the system. Also put a login password.
Now, these recommendations are to take care of the PlayStation Network account, which is where each user has their information.
First, use strong passwords, with a good combination of digits and do not include birthdays or birth dates, which are easy to track. They also advise using two-step authentication, the so-called A2P. This will add an additional layer of security to your PlayStation account.
The third step would be to ignore suspicious emails that reach the Play account or that reach the email linked to the account and that are Play topics. Check first to avoid data theft.
