The Republicans of the Senate group kept Bruno Retailleau at its head and proposed the candidacy of Gérard Larcher for the presidency of the Upper House, whose re-election scheduled for Monday is without doubt, Agence France-Presse (AFP) learned, Wednesday, September 27, with the group.

Unsurprisingly after Sunday’s senatorial elections, Mr. Retailleau was reappointed at the helm of the main force of the Upper Assembly, a position he has held since 2014. The only candidate, he was re-elected by acclamation during a meeting of the LR group Wednesday at the Palais du Luxembourg. Frédérique Puissat (Isère) and Laurent Somon (Somme) were elected vice-presidents of the group alongside the senator from Vendée. Jean-Pierre Vogel (Sarthe) will be treasurer of the group.

The senatorial right also designated, by acclamation, Gérard Larcher as candidate for president of the Senate. At 74, the senator, just re-elected in Yvelines, is seeking a fifth three-year term in office. « plateau »the seat reserved for the boss of the hemicycle, where he sat from 2008 to 2011 and since 2014. The president of the Senate had received, on Tuesday, the approval of the centrist Union (UC), the other pending from the senatorial majority, which gave it its unanimous support.

The right remains in the majority

Re-elected president of the socialist group, Northern senator Patrick Kanner will also be a candidate for Monday afternoon’s election, AFP learned from his parliamentary group. But he will not be able to compete with Gérard Larcher, given the very comfortable majority of the LR-UC base.

After Sunday’s senatorial elections, the LR group largely remained the leading force in the Upper House, despite an erosion which has yet to be precisely determined. Credited with 145 members before the election, it risks losing around ten units according to the latest estimates.

The socialist group, the second force in the Senate, has 64 members and still hopes to attract one or two, according to several parliamentary sources, while the centrist group has counted « 56 or 57 » members, according to its president, Hervé Marseille, Wednesday on Public Senate, i.e. stability. The composition of the parliamentary groups will be definitively decided on Tuesday October 3.
