Colombia, towards Total Peace? – Federico Aznar Fernández-Montesinos
The history of Colombia is marked by violence and the geographical conditions of the country. These hinder the full establishment of the State in the national territory, which, associated with a very unequal distribution of wealth and difficulties in accessing land ownership, explains the survival of guerrilla and drug trafficking movements in rural areas. Not in vain the country can produce up to 70 percent of the world’s cocaine.
The 2016 Agreements meant the demobilization of the FARC, but allowed their space to be occupied by criminal groups and other guerrilla groups, which have even increased cocaine production. In this context, President Petro is committed to peace, Total Peace, that addresses the country’s structural problems. A large-scale challenge that requires significant political capital.
